Exercise Program - SAIL (Stay Active and Independent for Life)

Who We Are

Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) is an evidence-based strength, balance and fitness program for adults 55 and older. Performing exercises that improve strength, balance and fitness are the single most important activity that adults can do to stay active and reduce their chances of falling. The entire curriculum of activities in the SAIL Program can help improve strength and balance, if done regularly.

What We Do

SAIL is an evidence-based program for older adults developed by the Washington State Department of Health. The hour long classes conducted twice a week include a warm-up, low impact aerobics, balance exercises, strength training with ankle-weights, stretching exercises, and an educational component.

SAIL Leaders teach a class twice a week. They may lead, assist a leader, or substitute. A day-long workshop will prepare volunteers to become trained and certified.

Training is provided and new instructors are supported by program manager and fellow instructors.

This is your opportunity to get and stay fit and help the community members to improve their health, strength, and independence, while providing an opportunity to be social and make friends.
